LIVING WITH TIGERS: WHAT THE SUNDARBANS TEACHES US ABOUT SURVIVAL

There is something revealing about how we speak about the environmental crisis. We talk of saving forests, protecting rivers, conserving species, and combating climate change. Nature appears as something outside us, damaged by human activity and needing repair. Yet a more difficult truth lies beneath. There is no ‘outside’ to which humanity can retreat. We are not mere spectators watching an ecological breakdown; we are active participants in it.

The Sundarbans makes this reality clear. The vast mangrove forest spanning India and Bangladesh is both a wilderness and a human home, a refuge for the Royal Bengal tiger and a source of everyday survival, a shield against cyclones and a region hit by rising seas, erosion, and salt water. Local residents rely on its waterways and trees to fish, gather honey, and earn a living. Yet, that same forest exposes them to dangerous storms, shifting tides, and violent encounters with wild predators. To view the Sundarbans strictly as a pristine wildlife sanctuary ignores half of its story.

The main question facing us is not how to return to an untouched wilderness. That ship has sailed. The real test is whether human societies can learn to live within nature without destroying the ecological systems that keep us alive. This is the heart of sustainability.

The Illusion of Separation

For much of modern history, progress was measured by how effectively humans controlled nature. Forests became timber, rivers became sources of irrigation, wetlands became real estate, minerals became products, and wild animals became either harvestable resources or dangerous pests. Technology promised to free humanity from direct dependence on the natural world.

It is impossible to ignore the massive benefits of this shift. Modern medicine, agricultural tools, transportation networks, and communication systems have dramatically improved human life expectancy and comfort. However, the same civilization that gave us these powers also gave us the ability to alter the entire planet. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2021) confirmed that human activities like burning fossil fuels have undeniably warmed the global climate and triggered extreme weather events across the globe.

Our environmental problem goes deeper than occasional irresponsible behaviour. The economic model driving the world treats nature’s resources as if they can regenerate forever. They cannot.

Nature as a Network of Relationships

Rachel Carson’s groundbreaking 1962 book, Silent Spring, changed how the world thinks about the environment. She proved that using chemical pesticides on a single target pest could ripple outward, damaging birds, soil, and entire food webs. Her key insight was simple: living systems are interconnected.

Ecology helps us see these hidden connections. A forest is not just standing lumber. A river is not just a pipe for water. A wetland is not a useless swamp waiting to be paved over. Each is an active web of relationships between soil, water, climate, organisms, and human communities.

Clear-cutting a forest destroys much more than wood. It disrupts local wildlife habitat, destabilizes regional rainfall, releases stored carbon, accelerates soil erosion, and strips local people of their livelihoods. Polluting a river harms fish, contaminates crops, poisons drinking water, and damages human health. The environmental crisis is fundamentally a crisis of oversimplification.

Lessons from the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans illustrates this challenge because its human and natural worlds are tightly bound together. Mangroves shelter the endangered tiger, but they also protect coastal villages from catastrophic storm surges. Rivers support small-scale fisheries while providing resources for families with few other job options.

The Royal Bengal tiger highlights this tension vividly. To a conservationist, the tiger is a rare, protected species that requires strict habitat preservation and a safe sanctuary. But to a local fisher or honey gatherer entering the forest, that same animal represents an immediate, life-threatening predator. Both perspectives are real, creating a deep dilemma between wildlife conservation and human safety.

The real challenge is creating conditions where both humans and wildlife can survive together. Protecting tigers while ignoring local poverty breeds resentment and non-compliance. Conversely, using the forest purely for fast cash destroys the habitat both species need.

Recent studies in the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve point to practical solutions (Dhar and Mondal, 2020; IUCN, 2021). Programmes that provided local communities with alternative ways to earn income like backyard poultry, goat farming, and cleaner cooking stoves, reduced the need to venture into deep forest territory. This led to fewer forest trips, less reliance on firewood, higher family incomes, and a drop in deadly encounters with tigers. Hence, protecting nature works best when we relieve the economic vulnerability that forces people to overexploit it.

The Environmentalism of the Poor

Historian Ramachandra Guha (1989, 2000) challenged the popular idea that environmentalism was invented by wealthy nations seeking to protect scenic wilderness. His research shows that in many developing regions, a different movement exists: the ‘environmentalism of the poor’.

Whereas affluent environmentalism often focuses on preserving beautiful landscapes, creating nature reserves, and enjoying wilderness for recreation, the environmentalism of the poor centres on securing access to vital resources such as fuel, food, and clean water, essential for basic human survival.

Environmental conflicts across India over dams, mining, logging, and industrial development, such as the famous Chipko movement where villagers hugged trees to stop logging, show that environmental questions are also questions of rights, fairness, and human survival.

Who Uses Nature’s Resources?

Global climate change forces us to ask a straightforward ethical question: How much should a person consume?

Mahatma Gandhi made a famous distinction between human need and human greed. He warned against building an entire economy on constantly creating new material wants. Ramachandra Guha’s comparative studies (2006) similarly examine how overconsumption threatens ecological stability.

Lumping all of ‘humanity’ together as equally responsible for damaging the planet is misleading. Resource consumption is wildly unequal both within countries and between them.

A rural villager struggling to gather basic firewood has a tiny environmental footprint compared to a wealthy individual whose routine lifestyle relies on frequent flights, multiple cars and heavy energy use.

Sustainability cannot mean applying the exact same rules and restrictions to everyone. We must address the issue of distribution and  identify who used up the planet’s ecological resources, and who is now being asked to pay the price for planetary limits.

Managing Shared Resources

For decades, traditional economic theories claimed that shared resources were doomed to be destroyed. They called it the ‘Tragedy of the Commons’. The theory argued that if a pasture, forest, or fishery is shared, individuals will selfishly take as much as they can before others do, leaving society to choose between privatizing the land or imposing top-down state control.

Nobel Prize-winning political scientist Elinor Ostrom (1990) proved this idea wrong. Her global research showed that local communities can organize self-governing frameworks, designing their own fair rules, community participation methods, and local monitoring systems to manage shared natural areas sustainably without relying on private corporate ownership or heavy-handed government control.

Local Knowledge Meets Modern Science

Modern environmental policy depends heavily on satellite images, climate models, and scientific surveys. But formal scientific data is not the only source of ecological truth.

Indigenous and local communities who have lived in coastal regions, forests, and mountains for generations carry deep traditional knowledge built over centuries. They understand subtle seasonal shifts, animal migration patterns, and local water behaviours. International environmental groups like the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES, 2019) formally recognize that local knowledge is essential alongside modern scientific research.

In the Sundarbans, local folklore and spiritual beliefs such as the veneration of Bonbibi (the protector deity of the forest) teach villagers caution, respect, and restraint when entering tiger territory. As anthropologist Annu Jalais (2010) observed, these cultural stories give communities a practical code of safety and environmental respect. Good environmental policies happen when modern science and local experience listen to each other.

Reimagining Progress

In his book The Great Derangement (2016), author Amitav Ghosh argues that the climate crisis is not just a political or scientific problem; it is a failure of imagination. Modern culture has normalized high-consumption lifestyles—treating big houses, private vehicles, and rapid consumption as the ultimate signs of personal success.

True sustainability requires changing these deep cultural assumptions. For poorer nations, economic growth remains essential to build hospitals, schools, housing, and clean water systems. The goal is not stopping growth altogether, but changing how we build our economies:

  • Transitioning from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy.
  • Designing cities centred around public transit rather than private cars.
  • Shifting toward a ‘circular economy’ focused on repair, reuse, and durability rather than disposable products.

In Small Is Beautiful (1973), economist E. F. Schumacher argued that economic activity should stay balanced with human needs and natural limits.

Living Within Ecological Limits

Scientists now refer to our current geological era as the Anthropocene where human activity has become a primary force altering the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, and land systems.

However, as historian Dipesh Chakrabarty (2009, 2021) points out, humanity is not a single, unified group. We must learn to balance two factors. One, human activity has grown powerful enough to alter global natural systems. Two, people around the world hold vastly unequal shares of wealth, power, and responsibility for these changes.

A sustainable future does not mean giving up technology or pretending we can go back to a pre-industrial past. It means adopting a new sustainability paradigm. Rather than asking what nature can give us or treating ecosystems as mere timber reserves to be controlled, we must ask what relationship with nature keeps us safe, recognizing forests as living systems we depend on and learning to live within natural boundaries.

This is the real lesson of the Sundarbans. Rivers do not consult government boundary maps before changing course, and cyclones do not stop at district borders. Nature works as an integrated system.

Living sustainably requires us to stop imagining nature as a far-off park or a resource pit. The first step is simply realizing that we are inside nature, and learning how to live responsibly within it.
